Raised in Nashua, New Hampshire, by his Nigerian parents, this 19-year-old point guard was chosen 17th by the Oklahoma City Thunder and then traded to the Detroit Pistons, where he will join compatriot Ugonna Onyenso.
As a freshman, Okorie was the 2025 ACC Player of the Year and the 2025 ACC Freshman of the Year, averaging 23.2 points per game, the best scoring average in the ACC, with 719 points scored on the year, the second-highest total by a freshman in Stanford history.
Okorie, who scored a career-high 40 points against Georgia Tech on 12-of-21 shooting, has three freshman games in Stanford history with 40 or more points, to go along with his 9-of-10 shooting in the Rose Bowl game against UCLA.
As the Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said himself, he had been watching Okorie’s highlights for a while and the rookie “just exploded onto the scene.”
The rookie said he was overwhelmed when he was told he had been chosen by the Pistons, noting he was “grateful for this opportunity” and that he was expected to provide an “additional playmaker” alongside Cunningham.
Okorie, the first Nigerian-heritage guard to rise to this draft, is being touted as one of the best point guards in this year’s draft class after a sensational freshman season.
