Nigeria has six of Africa’s ten most downloaded finance apps in 2026, including the number one OPay and Senegalese fintech Wave, with both exceeding 50 million downloads on Google Play. The figures highlight strong consumer adoption of mobile financial services across Africa and the growing presence of Nigerian fintech companies in the continent’s digital finance market.
In addition to OPay, other Nigerian apps including PalmPay, Moniepoint, Kuda, FairMoney and Palmcredit feature prominently on the list. These platforms provide a wide range of financial services, including digital payments, savings, transfers, business banking and micro-lending solutions to millions of users across Africa.
The list also includes Kenya’s M-PESA, South Africa’s Capitec Bank, Ethiopia’s Telebirr and MTN MoMo, which operates across several African countries. The mix of companies illustrates the increasingly pan-African nature of the fintech boom, with mobile financial platforms becoming an important part of everyday transactions in different markets.
Nigerian Fintech Companies Continue to Gain Ground
The strong showing by Nigerian fintech apps reflects the country’s rapidly developing digital payments ecosystem. Mobile-first platforms have made it easier for consumers and small businesses to send money, receive payments, save and access financial services without relying entirely on traditional bank branches.
The numbers also highlight the extent to which mobile-first fintech banking has become an alternative to traditional banking for millions of Africans, particularly younger consumers and people who previously had limited banking histories.
However, downloads are only one measure of the success of a financial app. Fintech analysts note that different platforms can have significantly different retention rates, transaction volumes and levels of active usage. An app with millions of downloads may not necessarily have the same number of active customers.
Even with that limitation, the prominence of Nigerian apps in the 2026 rankings shows the scale of the country’s fintech ecosystem and the continued interest in mobile-based financial services across the continent.
