Performance problems on Apple Silicon Macs can come from memory pressure, game compatibility or the way an application is running. Checking what the system is actually doing can help identify the problem instead of simply lowering every graphics setting.
Check Memory Pressure
Open Activity Monitor from Applications and Utilities, then select the Memory tab.
Look at the Memory Pressure graph while the game is running. If memory pressure is consistently high, macOS may be relying heavily on storage to manage memory, which can contribute to stuttering.
Check Whether the Game Is Native
Open Activity Monitor and check the CPU information for the game. Look at the Kind column to determine whether the game is running natively or through Intel compatibility translation.
If a game is running as an Intel application, check whether the developer has released a native Apple Silicon version or update.
Close Resource-Heavy Applications
Close unnecessary applications while gaming. Safari and Chrome can maintain multiple background processes, and browser tabs can consume significant memory.
Closing demanding applications frees resources for the game, particularly on Macs with unified memory.
Check Power Settings
Review the Mac’s Battery settings and available power modes. On supported models, a higher-power mode can prioritize performance during demanding workloads.
If performance drops only after extended gaming, temperature and sustained thermal behavior should also be considered rather than focusing only on software.
