Zhou Yahui OPay Ownership and Background

Zhou Yahui, the Chinese entrepreneur behind Opera and an early backer of OPay, sits at the centre of one of Nigeria’s largest consumer fintech stories, even though he keeps a lower public profile than local executives.

A trained engineer, he first built significant wealth in the gaming sector before acquiring the Opera browser in 2016. In 2018, he incubated OPay inside the Opera structure specifically to serve African markets with mobile payments and related financial services.

The product launched in Nigeria and grew rapidly by combining a consumer wallet, agent network and high transaction reliability. SoftBank Vision Fund, Sequoia Capital China and other investors later joined rounds that pushed OPay’s valuation above two billion dollars.

Opera retained a meaningful equity stake while the company operated with increasing independence. Local leadership, including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer Dotun Adekunle, has handled day-to-day operations and public communication, especially during periods of market rumour.

By 2026, OPay reported tens of millions of users and hundreds of thousands of agents while processing very high daily transaction volumes.

Zhou’s personal net worth derives mainly from his broader technology holdings rather than OPay alone, and public estimates place him among China’s wealthier technology investors.

The ownership structure helps explain how international capital and local execution combined to create a platform that now sits among Nigeria’s most widely used financial apps. It also shows why key technical and operational decisions can involve both global and Nigerian leadership teams.
