Slow console download speeds can come from your internet connection, Wi-Fi conditions, console settings or another device using the same network. Before contacting your internet provider, isolate the problem to determine whether the console is actually receiving slower speeds.
Compare the Network Speed
Pause the download on the console and run a speed test on your phone while the phone is connected to the same network.
If your phone is also receiving poor speeds, the problem may involve the network rather than the console. If the phone performs normally while the console is extremely slow, investigate the console’s connection.
Check PS5 Rest Mode Downloads
On the PS5, check the network and rest-mode settings if you want downloads to continue while the console is in rest mode.
Make sure the relevant download settings are enabled so the console can continue downloading updates and games while it is not actively being used.
Check the Xbox Connection Type
If an Ethernet cable is connected to an Xbox, check Network Settings to ensure the console recognizes the connection as wired.
If it incorrectly continues using Wi-Fi, the connection may be slower than expected. Reconnecting the cable or restarting the network connection can help.
Use 5GHz Wi-Fi When Available
A 5GHz Wi-Fi connection can provide better performance than 2.4GHz in many home environments, particularly when there are many devices using the network.
Also avoid heavy streaming or large downloads on other devices while downloading a major game. Multiple devices competing for bandwidth can significantly reduce the speed available to the console.
