Ruja Ignatova Biography: Cryptoqueen, OneCoin Crimes and Most-Wanted Status

Checks by our biographical desk show that Ruja Plamenova Ignatova, born May 30, 1980, in Ruse, Bulgaria, grew up as the sharp daughter of an engineer father and teacher mother before the family moved to Germany when she was about ten.

She picked up German citizenship, studied hard, earned a PhD in private international law from the University of Konstanz, and even spent time at Oxford. The plain truth is this woman wanted money and status from early on.

By her thirties, she had built a public image as a flashy entrepreneur who threw big parties and talked like a finance expert. But here is where it gets crazy. In 2014, she co-founded OneCoin Ltd. in Bulgaria and started selling it as a brand-new cryptocurrency that would crush Bitcoin.

Millions of people around the world poured in money, more than four billion dollars by most tallies, believing the glossy presentations and promises of huge returns.

The OneCoin Scheme and Her Disappearance

Make we look at the facts. OneCoin had no real blockchain. It was a multilevel marketing pyramid that paid early joiners with cash from later victims. Ignatova and her circle kept the cash flowing while regulators in several countries started asking questions.

On October 12, 2017, a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York charged her with wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. Two weeks later, on October 25, she boarded a Ryanair flight from Sofia to Athens.

That was the last confirmed sighting. Period. She vanished.

Investigators say she had already converted large piles of the stolen money into cash, jewelry, and other assets.

The FBI added her to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on June 30, 2022, the only woman on the list at the time and only the eleventh woman ever.

The U.S. Department of State’s Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program now offers up to five million dollars for information that leads to her arrest or conviction.

As it stands right now, authorities believe she may travel on a German passport and could be hiding in places like the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Eastern Europe, South Africa, or even still moving through Greece or Bulgaria.

Some reports link her to Bulgarian underworld figures and talk of possible plastic surgery or armed bodyguards. She remains at large, and the search continues across continents.
